Pinoy Sailor - Jun Villanueva
Manila, Philippines, March, 2012 – For seven days from March 10-17, 19 teams composed of local and foreign sailors sailed through heavy winds across the beautiful islands of Northern Palawan to compete in the annual BlackBerry 12th Philippine Hobie Challenge. The eco-adventure took them to five islands in Northern Palawan from Coron to El Nido. The challenge also brought light to off-the-grid communities as part of the competition’s “Sail for Light” initiative in partnership with the Solar Energy Foundation.
First Place Winners
Finishing first place was Hobie Cat Australasia team of current World Champion Mick Butler and Bradley Wilson with a total time of 16:34:52. Australia’s Andrew Locke and the Philippines’ Arnel Ornales finished in 16:53:20 for second place. Hobie Grandmaster Champion Bruce Tardrew and Sarah Turnbull entered third place with a total running time of 16:56:12 while Natalie Hill, Jasmine Hill and Barnaby Houk clocked in a total of 17:09:09 for fourth place. The Philippines’ Jun Villanueva, Nestor Soriano and Neil Bernardo took home the fifth title with a total running time of 17:39:26, making this the first time in 12 years that a Filipino skipper won first place in a Leg of the Challenge.
